I don't think there's a single one I have that isn't picture boxed, and compression seems a little high, especially "Princess Mononoke", which has bad blocky artifacts in action scenes. Those technical issues appear to be behind us with this beautiful Blu-ray release. Full-frame, sharp-as-a-tack lines, popping colours: it's a monumental step up in quality. It also addresses that other trouble with the single-disc Madman DVD releases--lack of extras.

It's a wonderful story that stirs me every time I see it. The music, which I believe has been created by the same composer for all the Ghibli films, is notably lovely in evoking mood. This is the bedrock on which all the later remarkable work was laid.

I hope that the interval between "Ponyo" and "NausicaƤ" is indicative of the frequency with which we can expect new Ghibli Blu-ray releases. I'd like the sequence to match that of the films themselves. From now on, it's Blu-ray all the way for me.Jason Painterhttp://tunegardener.comnoreply@blogger.com
