Film review - Finding your feet

Image
I had to watch this film on a day when the universe was clearly conspiring against me, resulting in one of those awful days. Luckily for me, Finding Your Feet momentarily arrested me from whatever existential crisis I was experiencing. Such is the undeniable charm of Richard Loncraine’s latest offering.
After exposing her husband’s cheating ways, Sandra (Imelda Staunton) moves in with her estranged sister Bif (Celia Imrie). Bif’s tiny flat is a world away from the life of luxury Sandra is accustomed to. In an attempt to rekindle Sanda’s zest for life, Bif drags her along to a community dance class. From there Sandra gradually remembers to embrace simple pleasures in life she’d long forgotten to savour.
While it won’t win any awards, Finding Your Feet is a serviceable, run-of-the-mill film which does what it needs to do. It’s a bunch of veteran British stars you’ll easily recognise, all putting in honest work. My only really complaints were that It’s possibly fifteen to twenty minute…

Gunslinger Girl - Review

Image
For a book about a woman who's purportedly an excellent shot, Gunslinger Girl misses more often than it hits.

In a future America that's equal parts Westworld, Borderlands and Red Dead Redemption, Serendipity Jones is a girl with few things, including a pair of asshole brothers, a controlling (and likely childbeating) father, her late mother's twin six-shooters and a lyrical name that can be, unfortunately, shortened to Pity. After suffering one familial humiliation session too many, Pity and her friend Finn decide to leave their two-bit town and head for Columbia, beacon of civilisation and city of adventure. En route, Pity gets waylaid and redirected to the much seedier settlement of Cessation, where she unwillingly falls in with a troupe of performers from the Theatre Vespertine, famed in Cessation as a premier source of entertainment. Except sometimes, the Theatre performs a Finale, and that's where Pity starts to have problems.

A sci-fi western set in a near-futur…

THE STORY AND CHARACTERS
We've all wanted to be a superhero at some point, right?

In a world where 80% of the population are born with Quirks - abnormal powers that make them eligible to become superheroes - Izuku "Deku" Midoriya stands out. He was born Quirkless, and has to make do with spectating for both his own superpowered friends and the publically beloved heroes they strive to one day be. After a run-in with one of those heroes, the charismatic All-Might, Deku gets a shot at finally having his own Quirk in order to enter the Hero Academy, given a chance to one day stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the world's greatest caped and cowled characters.

Essentially, it's Harry Potter by way of Teen Titans and X-Men. I've heard worse ideas.

When reading My Hero Academia, the thing I'm most remi…

Inspired by true events at the most haunted house in history. On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits a house that knows no end. Built by heiress Sarah Winchester (Academy Award® winner Helen Mirren) in an incessant twenty-four-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week mania over decades, it stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms, staircases to nowhere and doors that open into walls. To the outsider it looks like a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman’s madness. But Sarah is not building for herself, for her niece (Sarah Snook) or for the troubled Doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) who has been summoned to the house. She is buil…
