Alien: Covenant DIGITAL HD AUG 9th/4K, Blu-ray and DVD AUG 16th

Image
With Alien: Covenant arriving on Digital HD on Wednesday 9 August and on 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™ and DVD on Wednesday 16 August, I thought i'd take the opportunity to revisit one of my most anticipated films of 2017. As an unabashed fan of Ridley Scott's Prometheus (2012) I had hoped that Alien: Covenant firstly; might answer some of my lingering questions about the franchise and secondly; continue to stumble down the philosophical rabbit-hole established by its predecessor. For the most part it achieved both. However, upon a re-watching Covenant, it felt a little too interested in being an "Alien" style film and sadly tonally dissimilar to Prometheus . For some fans that may be a good thing, but for me it's not. That being said, there's a tonne to like in Alien: Covenant . Scott assembles a cast befitting the franchise. Led ably by Katherine ‘Ripley 2.0’ Waterston, Billy ‘Hi, I’m religious’ Crudup, Danny ‘I love my wife’ McBride and the true rock sta...

Hardcore Henry - Review

Image
Sorry Super Mario Bros (1993) you’ve finally been dethroned as the pinnacle of video game inspired cinema.  Hardcore Henry is here and it’s a truly bat-shit-crazy experience, one which simply must be experienced. Think a first-person shooter video game meets the Bourne series; but with tonnes of extreme violence. Be warned, in terms of the violence, this film will definitely offend some viewers. It makes most modern horror films look like freakin’ Sesame Street ! Hardcore Henry is almost every first-person shooter game plot ever conceived rolled into one. Henry wakes in a futuristic medical facility missing his left hand and left foot. His wife and apparent nurse Estelle (Haley Bennett) delivers some basic exposition while reattaching the missing appendages, which kind of serves as a tutorial level. Keeping in mind this entire film is shot like a video game and so never shifts from the Henry’s POV perspective. It’s a style which at first is a little jarring, but we’r...

Eye in the Sky - Review

Image
Gavin Hood’s Eye in the Sky is about a moral quandary in wartime. The film serves as an autopsy for our current love affair with drone technology, carefully dismantling a routine drone strike in order to evaluate each stakeholder in the decision making process. It craftily weighs up the loss of human life against political gain; resulting in a taut thriller, that’s constantly morphing as fresh perspectives are added to the mix. Colonel Katherine Powell (Helen Mirren) has spent years tracking some unsavoury terrorist types across the globe. Through hard work she’s finally corralled her targets under the one roof in an African hideout. So time to pull the trigger, right?! Not so fast there Quickdraw! Colonel Powell must now liaise with the wet-blanket Political-types to get final clearance. It’s here where the film truly shines; as contentious moral and strategic points are debated between various bureaucratic combatants, amidst the real-time drama unfolding on the ground in ...

Kill Me Three Times

Image
Given there’s not too much out at the cinema worth shouting about at the moment, I suggest you check out Kill Me Three Times.  It's a darkly comedic film about hitman Charlie Wolfe (Simon Pegg) who’s having one of those classic bad days. Death and destruction is the order of the day, as a relatively simple contract killing quickly spins out of control, with poor Charlie continuously in the wrong place at the wrong time. Directed by Kriv Stenders ( Red Dog ) who delivers an entertaining little film which flaunts the picturesque Western Australian shooting locations. Kill Me Three Times will appeal to anyone who got a kick out of films like You’re Next , Seven Psychopaths and Getting Square; the David Wenham/Sam Worthington film from a few years back. Kill Me Three Times is available on Blu Ray, DVD and digital platforms from the 9th of September. Make sure you check out the Kill Me Three Times experience here. - Stu

Farscape Season 1 Blu Ray Review

Image
No offense intended but if someone were to recommend a sci-fi series which is filled with Muppets, set inside a living ship, produced in, and starring actors from Australia I'd call them crazy. Luckily, Farscape is the kind of series which shines in spite of expectations.  Flung through a cosmic wormhole, American astronaut John Crichton finds himself fighting for his life in the middle of an alien prison break, inside a Leviathan a living space ship on the far side of the galaxy. Hunted by the relentless Crais, a commander of the galactic enforcers known as Peacekeepers, Crichton joins forces with the alien convicts hulking warrior Ka D’Argo; blue-skinned Priestess Z’haan; diminutive Dominar Rigel XVI; the giant symbiote Pilot and the irreversibly contaminated Peacekeeper Aeryn Sun. Each desperately seeks a way home, but first, they have to find a way to trust one another. Daring escapes and selfless acts of courage forge a measure of loyalty, friendship and even love....

The Devil is a Part-Timer! Blu Ray Review

Image
There have been countless stories about the Devil, Beezlebub, His Infernal Majesty finding himself in the realm of humans but this is a story with a difference because as the title (of the light novel, manga AND anime series') suggests, the Devil is a Part-Timer (はたらく魔王さま!). Finding himself stuck on earth, in a diminutive flesh-bag of a human body, the Devil and his offsider find themselves in need of work to pay their way in this new and unusual world. Enter fast food chain, MgRonald's. The dark lord not only takes up a position in customer service but he excels at it! Finding himself filled with both disdain and affection for his new home, the devil and his lackey are subject to action, adventure, hilarity and a number of difficult personal choices. While this series is above all else a comedy, The Devil is a Part-Timer! has quite a few action sequences which are so well realised that it made me wish for even more. That's not to say that the series suffers, bu...

Noah Blu Ray Review

Image
The cinematic release of Noah was marred by boycotts and controversy from the get-go. It seemed that some people just weren't able to stomach this different interpretation, claiming an unreasonable ownership over it, a story that is both universally found in myth as well as being very much in the public domain. As director Darren Aronofsky was quick to point out in interviews, the story of the flood is one that belongs to all people, not just those identifying with a specific faith. Look, all I'm saying is 'Hansel and Gretel: Which Hunters', another beloved public domain story given the Hollywood treatment, didn't have to put up with this crap. Controversy aside, Noah is the biblical fable come to life, combined with the visual overlay and spectacle of epic fantasy. It's big, it's bold and although at times a bit outspoken, it's a movie with a message. Understandably the film has to take quite a bit of artistic license to expand the story to...

Blue Exorcist: The Movie Review (Blu Ray)

Image
Need something to tide you over until the release of Attack on Titan collection 2, maybe something a little less gruesome? Grab yourself a copy of Blue Exorcist: The Movie for some light-hearted, gorgeously animated fun. We head back to the angelic surroundings of True Cross Academy, where Rin and the gang are still training to become fully fledged exorcists. Preparations for a traditional festival are interrupted by a phantom train (I'm pretty sure CityRail has those!) leaving Rin, Yukio and Shiemi to sort things out. Of course, Rin does more harm than good, albeit through the best of intentions, and winds up babysitting the cutest little demon you've ever seen. Blue Exorcist has been one of my absolute favourite series of the last few years. Both the manga and subsequent anime series have been top notch in terms of both story and visuals so it should be no surprise that the movie is every bit as fantastic. Capturing the general aesthetic of Kazue Kato's source mat...

Attack on Titan Collection 1 (Blu Ray) Review - Second Opinion

Image
Way back in my single-digit years, I watched Neon Genesis Evangelion. On reflection this might not have been the best idea for a neophyte child, especially when the Angel-eating and everybody-turns-into-lemonade bits came up. Re-watching it as a teen with a modicum of analytical discourse, one big thing struck me about it – innovation. Near as I could tell, nothing had been done like it before. It was groundbreaking on its own, juxtaposing a giant robot story against an intense interpersonal saga of character development, black comedy and psychological deconstruction, but as a popular release during the early-to-mid ‘90s period of anime gaining burgeoning attention in the Western market – alongside luminaries like Ghost in the Shell and Akira – it was damn near revolutionary. I would go so far as to brazenly offer that Attack on Titan is to the current anime generation as Evangelion was to the earlier one. Love it or hate it, it’s an experience. You’ve probably already read Ry...

Attack on Titan Collection 1 (Blu Ray) Review

Image
Attack on Titan has to be one of the biggest manga/anime franchises in recent memory. Sure, One Piece is still the king of sales but Attack on Titan is swiftly showing itself to be a great money spinner and, if it keeps going the way that it is, will undoubtedly find itself as one of the most popular anime and manga series of all time. You can quite often judge the popularity of a franchise based on the volume of merchandising and product tie-ins that hit shelves. In this case, we've seen Lawson stores completely decked out in Attack on Titan regalia, bad-arse iPhone covers suitable for any Survey Corps member, titanic tea making equipment and even a colossal burger set which is all but guaranteed to bust an artery... or two. Hell, even car-maker Subaru got in on the action by showing that the only way to out run a horde of titans is behind the wheel of a Forrester . So, with that in mind, is Attack on Titan really all that good? In short.... hell yeah.  There's som...

A Mech-Heads guide to Watching Transformers

Image
One of the most iconic and enduring cartoon franchises of the 1980s, Transformers and its accompanying universe is as vast as it is awesome but due to its immensity it can be difficult to know where to start.  Sure, you could just start with Gen 1, Season 1 but where to from there?  Unfortunately, not all Transformers series take place in the same universe or continuity so there's no hard and fast rule ,  but we've consulted with the mech-heads at Madman and put together a handy dandy recommended viewing order for their Transformers releases and 100% Bay-free. The Transformers Generation 1 Season 1 This is where it all began, way back in 1984. This was our first introduction to Optimus and the gang who found themselves stranded on "present day" Earth. Also introduced are the majority of main characters who still exist today including Soundwave, Starscream, Megatron and everyone's favourite dim-witted Dinobot, Grimlock. Season 1 weighs in a...
