Episode 10! Double Digits! Can you believe Stu and have made it 10 episodes without killing each other? This week we watched The Nice Guys, directed by Shane Black and staring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe.  This buddy noir comedy sees Holland March (Ryan Gosling) as a down-on-his-luck private eye, and  Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) as a hired enforcer who hurts people for a living, against the backdrop of a  1977 Los Angeles.  Fate turns them these two into unlikely partners after a young woman goes missing, and soon learn the hard way that some dangerous people are after her too. The cinematic release of Noah was marred by boycotts and controversy from the get-go. It seemed that some people just weren't able to stomach this different interpretation, claiming an unreasonable ownership over it, a story that is both universally found in myth as well as being very much in the public domain. As director Darren Aronofsky was quick to point out in interviews, the story of the flood is one that belongs to all people, not just those identifying with a specific faith. Look, all I'm saying is 'Hansel and Gretel: Which Hunters', another beloved public domain story given the Hollywood treatment, didn't have to put up with this crap. Controversy aside, Noah is the biblical fable come to life, combined with the visual overlay and spectacle of epic fantasy. It's big, it's bold and although at times a bit outspoken, it's a movie with a message. Understandably the film has to take quite a bit of artistic license to expand the story to...

Comic book movies are a money making machine nowadays and DC/Warner Bros latest incarnation of everyone's favourite Kryptonian is no different. With an estimated budget of USD $225 million, the film has already surpassed $400 million worldwide but does financial success a quality movie make? Man of Steel is the great hope for DC and Warner Bros to cash in on the superhero craze and hopefully make enough coin to finally float that Justice League film that we've heard so much whispering about. However as a character, Superman is a surprisingly hard sell. Even when talking to my wife she said "Superman is boring. He's never really going to be in danger so where's the story in that?". Frankly, this statement is genius. The highest hurdle over which this super-alien needs to leap is giving the audience a sense of impending doom or at least some semblance of threat but instead falls short and leaves us with what is essentially a disaster movie in a cape. ...

Having worked in a comic shop, a video store and a hip hope record store, I feel that I am perfectly primed to review The Man with the Iron Fists (TMWTIF). A star studded affair from the ground up, TMWTIF has Quentin Tarantino producing while Wu Tang Clan co-founder RZA directs and co-writes the screenplay with Cabin Fever and Hostel director, Eli Roth. Add to this a cast which includes Lucy Liu, Korean-American stalwart Rick Yune, up and comer Jamie Chung and our very own scene stealer Russell Crowe and you have the makings of a rather special ode to kung fu.
