Zootopia - Review

Image
Beneath Zootopia’s furry facade, lurks some compelling social commentary. Sure it’s a kids film about an adorable bunny cop solving a missing persons case; but for adults, the filmmakers have laced this story with the perils of stereotyping and the manipulation of citizens via fear. A lot to squeeze into a animated feature, but the Mouse House just keeps delivering the goods film after film. After a run in with the local bully, Judy Hopps vows to defy the odds and become Zootopia’s first bunny police officer. Moving from her parents’ carrot farm to the big smoke is an eye-opening experience, as Judy learns life isn't quite what she thought. When she's given her first real case, Judy is forced to team up with some unlikely partners to get to the bottom of it. There's enough mystery to keep adults engaged without it going too far over the heads of younger viewers. I hate saying this, cause I feel like I'm repeating it with every new film, but this is some t...

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom - Review

Image
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is a film that has drawn a fair amount of attention, not least for being released not long after Mandela’s own passing. It is not a perfect film and is, for the viewer, an extensive journey (clocking in at 2 hours, 27 mins), but one that is worth taking. It is an inspiring, moving and shocking story beautifully acted by leads Idris Elba ( The Wire , Luther , Thor ) as Mandela and Naomie Harris ( Skyfall, Pirates of the Caribbean ) as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. From the very beginning, the film declares itself to be “a very important biopic”, with a sweeping score set to dramatic slow-motion, frequent captioning of locations & dates and comprehensive dialogue, unpacking every moment that is captured of Mandela’s life. It cannot be described as a subtle film and at times verges on seeming a tad simplistic. Mandela and Winnie look just so glamorous and striking compared to the white South Africans who are generally unimpressive, ordinary-looking,...

Pacific Rim Review

Image
Over the last few years, Guillermo Del Toro has been involved in a whole bunch of films as Producer, Executive Producer, Associate Producer and even as a voice actor but Pacific Rim is the only film he has Directed since 2008's Hellboy II. That said, Del Toro's five year directorial lull has done nothing to diminish his ability for making an incredibly fun film, an incredibly fun film like Pacific Rim.
