Hustlers - review

Image
I nspired by the viral New York Magazine article, Hustlers follows a crew of savvy former strip club employees who band together to turn the tables on their Wall Street clients. “ You can either stand in the corner, or get in the ring ” - Romona Hustlers from Lorene Scafaria ( The Meddler ) explores stripping in New York from a female perspective. Their world is turned on its head by the 2008 Global Financial Crisis (GFC) requiring them to shift gears and do what they can to survive. I rather liked 70% of what this film has to offer. Sadly the film ultimately bleeds out to quiet a death via self inflicted wounds (namely writing and a mismanaged framing device). In recent years films such as The Wolf of Wall Street , The Big Short and to some extent Jodie Foster’s hidden gem Money Monster have wrestled with the complicity of Wall Street traders which led to the catastrophic crash. I’ve had enough of the preppy white guy in a suit doing badness for a little while. For m...

Parker (film) Review

Image
Donald E. Westlake, also known under the pseudonym Richard Stark, is responsible for a character who has apparently blossomed into a pop-culture sweetheart in recent years - the hard boiled, remorseless criminal known only as Parker. Probably best known to my fellow geeks from Darwyn Cooke's comic book adaptations through IDW, Parker is back but this time on celluloid starring everyones favourite action hero, Jason Statham. Before delving into the review, I'll admit to having never read the source material so any comment on the physical appearance of the character is purely based on research. That said, this seems to be somewhat of another "Jack Reacher" conundrum.

Based on bestselling novels by Donald E. Westlake, Parker is anti-hero who lives by a personal code of ethics: Don't steal from people who can't afford it and don't hurt people who don't deserve it. Set to punch its way onto your TV screen, PARKER stars Jason Statham as cult anti-hero Parker, and Jennifer Lopez in a gritty ride of non-stop action directed by Academy Award® winner Taylor Hackford (The Devil’s Advocate, Ray). Thanks to our pals at Hopscotch, we've got 5 copies of PARKER on DVD to give away! All you have to do is fill out the form below and you're in the running to score yourself a copy. What to Expect When You're Expecting - Review by Stu

Image
Forget Harry Potter . Move over Lord of the Rings . The definitive book-to-film adaptation of our generation has finally arrived. Okay, so perhaps I’m a bit heavy-on with the sarcasm, but the concept of transmuting a self-help book, no less, into a fictional, montage-style, feel good comedy leaves me a little bewildered. Sharon Mazel and Heidi Murkoff’s self help book What to Expect When You’re Expecting which has no doubt guided millions of women through the minefield which is pregnancy, its longevity is testimony to this fact. This does not mean that it will necessarily make for an entertaining film.
