Old - review (contains spoilers)

Image
A thriller about a family on a tropical holiday who discover that the secluded beach where they are relaxing for a few hours is somehow causing them to age, reducing their entire lives into a single day... M. Night Shyamalan’s latest mind-bending, twisty-turny effort Old , fails to live up to the best of his filmography. Perhaps he’s unfairly labelled as the twist guy, but we don’t get to choose our monikers in this life. His career has justifiably been built upon an ability to pull the rug out from under the audience, which perhaps has left us a little jaded over the years.Twists and turns are always appreciated, but they must be in service of the plot or character development. Sadly here the inevitable reveal didn’t really serve either.  Old primarily takes place on a idyllic beach, where a group of strangers are experiencing a phenomenon of accelerated ageing. I’ll be frank, there’s an intriguing kernel of a story at the heart of Old , it’s just never fully realized. The...

Get Even (PS4) Review

Image
To say I've been excited for people to finally check out Get Even is somewhat underselling it. Smartly mixing psychological horror with Bourne -style action, it was something of an oddity which greatly enthused me during the time spent with its demo. Now the full thing's out, I can rave further, and hopefully some of you will now get where I'm coming from. Be warned, though, that the biggest, most daring thing I loved about Get Even is something I absolutely refuse to talk about. But I'll get to that. I first checked out Get Even many moons ago , so I'll borrow from myself in terms of outlining the plot: "You play as Cole Black, a Sean Bean-accented mercenary who starts the game tracking down a kidnapped young woman in a dilapidated house filled with armed men. After seemingly setting off a bomb whilst rescuing her, Cole wakes up four years later outside an abandoned mental asylum, with no memory of the time in-between. A mysterious figure named...

Naoki Urasawa's Monster Part 1 (Anime) Review

Image
Naoki Urasawa's Monster is widely regarded as being a manga masterpiece so it should come as no surprise that the anime incarnation is just as fantastic. Ten years after it's initial release, the series is finally being released in Australia by the good people at Siren.  "What would you do if a child you saved grew up to be a monster? An ice-cold killer is on the loose, and Dr. Kenzo Tenma is the only one who can stop him! Tenma, a brilliant neurosurgeon with a promising future, risks his career to save the life of a critically wounded young boy named Johan. When the boy reappears nine years later in the midst of a string of unusual serial murders, Tenma must go on the run from the police who suspect him to be the killer. Conspiracies, serial murders, and secret government experiments set against the grim backdrop of the formerly communist Eastern Europe are masterfully woven together in the compelling work of suspense that is Naoki Urasawa's MONSTER...

Prisoners Review

Image
Prisoners is a dark and suspenseful police procedural which explores every parent’s worst fear: the kidnapping of their children. The scariest film villain is the plausible real-life monster who dwells amongst our communities; the shadowy figure lurking near play equipment or spying from behind drawn curtains. The question Prisoners asks is, how far as a parent would you go when faced with acts of evil.

Gravity Review

Image
Gravity, the latest film by visionary director Alfonso Cuaron (Y Tu Muma Tambien and Children of Men), is a thrilling story of the determination of the human spirit. Let me warn you: while not perfect, there are aspects of this film that I intend to gush over; in particular the special effects, which are close to immaculate. I’m stilling trying to work out how they actually made this film – is it green screen? Perhaps models or miniatures? Or maybe they just swiped some gear from NASA and filmed on location 600 hundred kilometres above the earth. Either way, the effects are ground-breaking and undoubtedly benchmark-setting. With strong performances and moments of sheer terror, Gravity is everything I want from a highly-crafted space thriller.

The Call - Review by Stu

Image
The Call could be easily be mistaken for a straight-to-DVD late 90s film due to its generic look and feel. After perusing director Brad Anderson’s ( The Machinist ) filmography I wasn’t surprised to see that the majority of his work has been in the wonderful world of television. His latest effort feels like an extended episode of a nondescript police television show. Halle Berry stars as veteran 911 Operator Jordan Turner who is forced to face her demons as a call goes horribly wrong when a young girl is kidnapped by a potential serial killer. By no means a perfect film, The Call delivers enough thrills and takes enough chances to warrant a watch.
