So now that Year Who Should Not Be Named is behind us, I thought I'd take a brief moment to reflect on my favourite films of the year. In years gone by I tried to catch as many new releases in cinemas, but the emergence of the streaming platforms has made that almost impossible. I'm still wrestling with the concept, so I can't appreciate if I like it or not. Surely it must be a good thing, but a part of me gets overwhelmed by the sheer volume of content blasted towards us. Maybe we're not meant to catch it all.  I’ve missed more films this year than I'd care to admit, hopefully I'll grab them in 2021. Would love to hear what films tickled your fancy this year. With 2019 winding down, film fans everywhere get to engage in the annual pointless exercise which is compiling our top films of the year lists. Oh the stress! What if we put something at 3 instead of 7?! What about this or that?! You put that there?! YOU MONSTER!! You get the idea. Now my only rule when compiling any end of year list is that these are just my favourite films. I’m not saying they’re the “best” of the year by any means. These are the films I can’t stop thinking about, even long after I caught them. Some linger longer than others, so that’s basically how I rank them. My biggest regret is that i didn't see enough foreign films this year. I kind of dropped the ball on world cinema despite the fact four non-english films are in my top 10. Only 115 trips to the cinema this year, so sadly a few things have slipped through the cracks. These choices really have nothing to say about the quality of the art, they’re merely the ones which haunted me the longest well after seeing them. For those films that straddle 2017/2018 I tend to not include them, as they’ve been caught by 2017 best of lists. Overall, it was a pretty solid year at the movies. November releases have torpedoed my top 10! Thanks to the directorial debuts from Greta Gerwig ( Lady Bird ) and John Carrol Lynch ( Lucky ), my top 10 needs some serious rearranging. Other notable watches this month include Blade of the Immortal from Takashi Miike, Downsizing from Alexander Payne and Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express . As we inch closer and closer to the end of the year, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching my list evolve over the past 11 months. Episode 29! The first podcast episode for 2017 and it's a big one! There is no film being watched and reviewed this week as Billy and Stu have gathered to go over their personal choices for Top 10 Films of 2016, which were mentioned the other day.
