With Finding Nemo returning to cinemas in 3D it’s a good opportunity to look at the recent spike in 3D films. It was a pleasure to see Finding Nemo back up on the big screen, whilst it was only released in 2003, somehow it feels like a classic. I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting the world of Nemo, Marlin, Dot and their many friends. Do we need further films in 3D or is it just a cheeky way to raise ticket prices? 3D films have been popular with studios ever since James Cameron’s Avatar demolished box office records in 2009 grossing $740 million in America and $2.7 billion world wide. It’s hard to say how big an impact 3D had on Avatar’s success however it did allow higher ticket prices which directly effected the box office. The 3D effects in Avatar are effective because they immersed the audience in the world that Cameron has created, being Pandora. Whilst looking back over the films of 2011 nostalgia was the theme that was constantly focused upon. This ranged from directors being accused of attempting to recreate the films of the their youth as was the case with JJ Abrams’s Super 8 to Terrence Malick who brought us into a deeply personal recreation of his troubled childhood in the years’ best film The Tree Of Life. The best film relating to nostalgia was Woody Allen’s fantastically magical Midnight in Paris which explored the perils of looking back in time in the hope of keeping memories alive or longing for another time. Hugo the latest film by master film maker Martin Scorsese is the adaption of the novel “ The Invention of Hugo Cabret ” by Brian Selznick which tells the story of a young orphan, Hugo Cabret ( Asa Butterfield ) who lives in the walls of a train station in 1930’s Paris. Hugo is going to be a massive release in Australia, as it has been everywhere else in the world. This may come as a surprise to us Aussie's because the overwhelming consensus is that nobody has heard of it! Regardless, Hugo has me incredibly excited for the new year, especially with such a fantastic cast and crew. Martin Scorcese, Christopher Lee and Sir Ben Kingsley... nuff' said! James Cameron and Martin Scorcese, two of the biggest names in modern cinema, talk about the upcoming 3D film Hugo which is Produced and Directed by Scorcese himself. Due for release in Australia on the 12th of January 2012, Hugo has already wowed fans overseas with an average 96% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.com and 8.6/10 on IMDB.com. Furthermore, Scorcese was named Director of the Year and Hugo the Film of the Year by New York's National Board of Review. "Hugo tells the story of an orphan boy living a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station. With the help of an eccentric girl, he searches for the answer to a mystery linking the father he recently lost, the ill-tempered toy shop owner living below him and a heart shaped lock, seemingly without a key."
