Stu's super-dooper-must-see-extravaganza list of 2017! (AKA December at the movies)

Image
So here we are, 190 odd films later and 2017 has been put to bed. I’ve had an absolute ball this year. For once, it was nice to say I saw my New Year’s resolutions through to the end. I endeavoured to record my top 10 films of the year at the end of each month and thankfully it’s all over. But that just leaves one important list to present, my top 10 as of the end of December. Sigh. I still hate this moment. In fact, I’ll regret this list for the next 6 months or so, no matter the order or content. For me "best" is simply the films from this year I can't stop thinking about. Most films trickle away shortly after the moment, but luckily each year we're treated to those gems which linger in our hearts and minds many months later. With that I present to you my super-dooper-must-see-extravaganza list of 2017! Not just my final top 10 films of the year, but I've also packed a tonne of other goodies in there too. If you agree or disagree with my list please sound o...

October at the Movies

Image
Okay, we’re rapidly approaching the end of the year and my anxiety is going through the roof. Doing this list on a monthly basis was meant to make the whittling process far more manageable; but I’m pretty sure it has only made things worse. Call Me by Your Name has been promoted to top spot for now. Much like Land of Mine , each time I reminisce about the film, I’m overcome by a wave of emotion. Surely this must be a measure of fine storytelling. October has been a huge month at the cinemas, with some genuine contenders for “film of the year” honors entering the race. I strongly suggest you catch Good Time, Killing of a Sacred Deer, Blade Runner 2049 and Brigsby Bear . You won’t be disappointed. Please go back and check out my Top 10 lists as they’ve evolved throughout the year. It’s been an emotional journey. - Stu January February March April May June July August September TOP 10 as of the end of October: 1. Call Me By Your Name 2. Land of Mi...

Okay, seriously, where is this year going?! I know I joked about it last month, but I blinked and September has gone. The only change to my Top 10 was Lost City of Z subbing in for A Ghost Story ; both are damn fine films and I hope you make time to see them. May at the movies

Image
Get Out  reigns supreme at the end of May. Michael Winterbottom's Trip to Spain waltzes into the Top 10 thanks to the loveable bickering of Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. Sadly Alien: Covenant , Wonder Woman  and  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 haven't been able to muscle their way in despite solid efforts. Next week sees Sydney Film Festival come to town, so hopefully my Top 10 hits some enjoyable/terrifying turbulence. Also please check out my lists for January , February , March and April . Always happy to hear your feel back, so sound off in the comments below.  Top 10 as of May 1. Get Out 2. Moonlight 3. Land of Mine 4. Loving 5. The Salesman 6. Trip to Spain 7. A Man Called Ove 8. April at the Movies

While Get Out doesn't get its official Australian release until May 4; it managed to remain at number one for the second month in a row. Surprisingly John Wick: Chapter 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 both failed to crack my top 10. Trust me, I'm more shocked than you are. Rachel Weisz's Denial has crept into tenth place at the expense of The Lego Batman Movie. As always I'd love to hear your thoughts on my list. Feel free to check out my lists for  January , February and March . If you agree or disagree sound off in the comments below. - Stu Top 10 for April: 1. Get Out 2. Moonlight 3. Land of Mine 4. January at the movies

Image
Every December when compiling my top 10 films of the year, I stress out to the point that I basically swear off watching movies ever again. So this year, i’m adopting a new approaching; I’m going to maintain a top 10 list all year which will be revisited each month to factor in the new things I’ve seen. An ongoing cinematic cage match as it were; where combatants will face wave after wave of new contenders. Each month I’ll list all the films I watch either theatrically or video on demand and rank them accordingly. I’d love it if you played along as the year goes on and of course if you've see any of these films and agree or disagree with their ranking please feel free to yell at me in the comments below. January Top 10: 1. Moonlight 2. Jackie 3. Manchester by the Sea 4. Edge of Seventeen 5. Rosalie Blum 6. Perfect Strangers 7. Live by Night 8. Patriot's Day 9. Split 10.
