Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One - The Biggest Stunt in Cinema History!

Image
Now we all appreciate that Tom Cruise is a raving loon, but he’s OUR raving loon! He’s one of the few storytellers pushing the action genre forward on such a grand scale. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is one of our most anticipated films for 2023, not only because it looks bat-shit crazy fun, but because McQuarrie and Cruise have managed to up the stakes with every entry of late.    This stunt looks too wild to comprehend.   Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part On e is exclusive to cinemas July 13, 2023

Hitman, Part 2: Sapienza & Marrakesh (PS4) Review

Image
This is the second in a series of reviews that cover the new, episodic Hitman  game across most of 2016. Each episode will be reviewed and scored as it is released. Check out Episode 1 here . --- THE SHORT VERSION After the cold-toned mansion in Paris, Hitman uses more vibrant and thrilling locales for episodes that are mechanically solid but narratively shaky. STORY I've gotta be honest - I have no idea what the story of the new Hitman is anymore. On the margins, it seems as if a grizzly older guy - who may be a former ICA operative, or is perhaps just a nutter with an aptitude for murder - is after something being held by an organisation called Providence. Though we keep getting cutscenes at the end of each story mission that attempt to convey the narrative, the game makes Agent 47 feel divorced from the larger plot going on around him by its alarming lack of focus within gameplay. Sure, one of the Paris targets might have turned out to be involv...

Hitman, Part 1: Prologue and Paris (PS4) Review

Image
This is the first in a series of reviews that cover the new, episodic Hitman  game across most of 2016. Each episode will be reviewed and scored as it is released. Check out Part 2, which covers Episodes 2 and 3, here . --- THE SHORT VERSION Agent 47 is back. If, like me, you thought the linear  Hitman: Absolution  was a bit of a letdown - especially following the organic sandbox assassinationpalooza that was Hitman: Blood Money  - then fear not! 2016's new Hitman  is a bold, if slightly anaemic, return to the franchise's halcyon days. If, unlike me, you've never played a Hitman  game, then fear not! 2016's new Hitman  is a fun, if slightly repetitive, venture into the under-utilised stealth game genre, that will have you garrotting and silenced-shooting for hours. If, also unlike me, you've never played any kind of game before...well, sorry, can't help you there. Enjoy this cupcake, instead. STORY What makes Hitman 2016  di...

Just Cause 3 (PS4) Review

Image
THE SHORT VERSION It's mayhem, pure and simple. This isn't the poignant, epic quest that something like The Witcher 3  is, nor is it the kind of character-driven, 'shape the world your way' story of Fallout 4 . This is the kind of game where you make your own fun by derailing a pair of trains with limpet explosives before jumping into a plane, flying it at a satellite dish and hookshooting yourself onto an escaping jeep. Blow up all of the things. STORY After spending most of his career blowing things up for a living, former Agency Agent Rico Rodriguez returns to his home archipelago of Medici. The place has fallen under the dictatorial rule of General Di Ravello, the unholy bastard child of Caligula and Josef Stalin, and it falls to Rico to liberate Medici from its hated conquerors. So, basically, Rico now has to blow things up for a literal living, rather than just a financial one. Much like Just Cause 2 , the story here feels almost entirely vestigia...

The Raid 2: Berandal Review

Image
Apparently director Gareth Evans hasn’t heard that sequels are meant to be a massive disappointment for fans of beloved films, because The Raid 2: Berandal kicks the living bejeezus out of that concept. 2011’s The Raid set a benchmark for bat-shit-crazy martial arts set pieces, the likes of which induced guttural reactions from audiences, mostly due to the high impact, savage fighting style on display. Whilst the action got the blood pumping, it was wrapped in a grounded, well crafted and character-based story which really resonated with me. The Raid 2 deftly expands upon the world created in the first film, showing us the true breadth and depth of the corruption and violence which plagues the city. The beauty of this series is the simplistic storytelling. The first film revolves around a SWAT team storming a baddie-infested apartment building in order to take down a criminal kingpin; that is until all hell breaks loose. This film is set two hours after the events of the first f...

*CLOSED* Win a Double Pass to The Raid 2

Image
Prepare yourself. Prepare your body. Prepare your eyeballs to be kicked in their little eyeball heads over and over before being pounded with a hammer. It's nearly time for The Raid 2. “Picking up right where the first film ends, The Raid 2 follows Rama as he goes undercover and infiltrates the ranks of a ruthless Jakarta crime syndicate in order to protect his family and uncover the corruption in his own police force.” In cinemas from March 28, The Raid 2 promises to be one of (if not THE) best action films of the year. Following on shortly after the end of the first film, The Raid 2 is bigger, better and ballsier than the original... and that's saying something! To celebrate, we've got 10 in-season double passes to give away but because this movie is so bad arse, this competition is only available to entrants over 18 years of age. All you have to do is fill out the form below and you're in the running to win yourself an in-season double pass than...
