Cold Pursuit Giveaway (In cinemas February 7th)

Image
Welcome to Kehoe, it’s -10 degrees and counting at this glitzy ski resort in the Rocky Mountains. The local police aren’t used to much action until the son of unassuming town snowplow driver, Nels Coxman (Liam Neeson), is murdered at the order of Viking (Tom Bateman), a flamboyant drug lord. Fueled by rage and armed with heavy machinery, Nels sets out to dismantle the cartel one man at a time, but his understanding of murder comes mainly from what he read in a crime novel. As the bodies pile up, his actions ignite a turf war between Viking and his long-standing rival White Bull (Tom Jackson), a soulful Native-American mafia boss, that will quickly escalate and turn the small town’s bright white slopes blood-red.  To celebrate the release of Liam Neeson’s Cold Pursuit , the legends at STUDIOCANAL have slipped us some double-passes. A Million Ways to Die in the West - Review

Image
Disclaimer: Due to technical reasons at my screening, we were unable to see the final thirty minutes of this film, but -- spoiler warning -- I still loved it! After the indisputable success of his directorial debut, Ted , which raked in over $540 million worldwide, I’d imagine Seth MacFarlane had free reign to make anything he wanted. It came as a surprise, however, when it was announced that he’d be making a western; no one really expected that. A Million Way to Die in the West is an entertaining assortment of oddball characters getting themselves into all sorts of trouble on the frontier, all woven together with that cheeky infectious charm that Macfarlane is known for. Set in Arizona in 1882, local sheep farmer Albert Stark (Seth Macfarlane) has just been dumped by his girlfriend Louise (Amanda Seyfried), after failing to take part in a duel. Albert’s life is forever changed when he meets the mysterious Anna (Charlize Theron), who helps him find his much-needed confidence...

The Lego Movie Review

Image
Deceptively simple in its construction (pun thoroughly intended), The Lego Movie is an immensely entertaining film with cross-generational appeal. Armed to the teeth with pop culture references and presented in jaw-dropping animation, the film struck a chord with me, much like 2001’s Shrek, in that beneath the visual wizardry lies an important message - that it’s okay to be different. Based upon the popular toy franchise, the film weaves the story around a basic concept. The world within the film is divided into two broad categories: those who build their Lego explicitly following the instructions and the more free-spirited builders who channel their inner architect. Emmet Brickowski (Chris Pratt) is just a regular Lego man who lives a safe and normal life following the rules. Every day he watches the same television show, drinks the same overpriced coffee, listens to whatever the radio tells him to and works at a construction site. He lives in a world secretly controlled by the...

Non-Stop - Review

Image
Non-Stop is the perfect example of a film which takes off strongly, soars for forty minutes or so, hits some turbulence and eventually performs a crash landing into the evergreen pastures of cliche, to the point that it could be renamed Please-Stop. Despite marketing to the contrary this is not an unofficial Taken 3. The premise of the film feels like something that Hitchcock would have been interested in, given the moral implications of certain decisions and a setting which has inherent suspense. Unfortunately the writers of this film do not posses the third act skills to rescue it. Bill Marks (Liam Neeson) is a grizzled burnt-out-former-cop who has taken a job as an Air Marshall. Although he hates flying, he’s a functioning alcoholic and chronically in debt. Bill’s day starts with pre-flight cocktails in his car, gulping down equal parts whiskey and regret before lurching his way through the terminal to take his fateful flight. Once on board little does he know that this ...
