Hardcore Henry - Review

Image
Sorry Super Mario Bros (1993) you’ve finally been dethroned as the pinnacle of video game inspired cinema.  Hardcore Henry is here and it’s a truly bat-shit-crazy experience, one which simply must be experienced. Think a first-person shooter video game meets the Bourne series; but with tonnes of extreme violence. Be warned, in terms of the violence, this film will definitely offend some viewers. It makes most modern horror films look like freakin’ Sesame Street ! Hardcore Henry is almost every first-person shooter game plot ever conceived rolled into one. Henry wakes in a futuristic medical facility missing his left hand and left foot. His wife and apparent nurse Estelle (Haley Bennett) delivers some basic exposition while reattaching the missing appendages, which kind of serves as a tutorial level. Keeping in mind this entire film is shot like a video game and so never shifts from the Henry’s POV perspective. It’s a style which at first is a little jarring, but we’r...

Eye in the Sky - Review

Image
Gavin Hood’s Eye in the Sky is about a moral quandary in wartime. The film serves as an autopsy for our current love affair with drone technology, carefully dismantling a routine drone strike in order to evaluate each stakeholder in the decision making process. It craftily weighs up the loss of human life against political gain; resulting in a taut thriller, that’s constantly morphing as fresh perspectives are added to the mix. Colonel Katherine Powell (Helen Mirren) has spent years tracking some unsavoury terrorist types across the globe. Through hard work she’s finally corralled her targets under the one roof in an African hideout. So time to pull the trigger, right?! Not so fast there Quickdraw! Colonel Powell must now liaise with the wet-blanket Political-types to get final clearance. It’s here where the film truly shines; as contentious moral and strategic points are debated between various bureaucratic combatants, amidst the real-time drama unfolding on the ground in ...

Kill Me Three Times

Image
Given there’s not too much out at the cinema worth shouting about at the moment, I suggest you check out Kill Me Three Times.  It's a darkly comedic film about hitman Charlie Wolfe (Simon Pegg) who’s having one of those classic bad days. Death and destruction is the order of the day, as a relatively simple contract killing quickly spins out of control, with poor Charlie continuously in the wrong place at the wrong time. Directed by Kriv Stenders ( Red Dog ) who delivers an entertaining little film which flaunts the picturesque Western Australian shooting locations. Kill Me Three Times will appeal to anyone who got a kick out of films like You’re Next , Seven Psychopaths and Getting Square; the David Wenham/Sam Worthington film from a few years back. Kill Me Three Times is available on Blu Ray, DVD and digital platforms from the 9th of September. Make sure you check out the Kill Me Three Times experience here. - Stu

Monsters: Dark Continent - Review

Image
In 2010, Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Star Wars: Rogue One) delivered Monsters, the micro-budget Sci-Fi film punching well above its weight. With a few clever tricks and evocative locations, the film superbly hinted at an environment much vaster than that portrayed on screen. I can’t recommend it highly enough; it’s an excellent example that art can flourish despite severe financial restrictions. Monsters: Dark Continent picks up the action 10 years after the events of the first film, shifting the focus from America to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. If things weren’t bad enough already, American troops are not only battling insurgent forces, but now there’s the added risk of gigantic, multi-tentacled monsters hanging around and getting up to no good. Whilst the setting is nowhere near as interesting as the first film, I appreciated that it was at least distinct from its predecessor. Tom Green tackles directing and writing duties and does an admirable job presenting a ...

Farscape Season 1 Blu Ray Review

Image
No offense intended but if someone were to recommend a sci-fi series which is filled with Muppets, set inside a living ship, produced in, and starring actors from Australia I'd call them crazy. Luckily, Farscape is the kind of series which shines in spite of expectations.  Flung through a cosmic wormhole, American astronaut John Crichton finds himself fighting for his life in the middle of an alien prison break, inside a Leviathan a living space ship on the far side of the galaxy. Hunted by the relentless Crais, a commander of the galactic enforcers known as Peacekeepers, Crichton joins forces with the alien convicts hulking warrior Ka D’Argo; blue-skinned Priestess Z’haan; diminutive Dominar Rigel XVI; the giant symbiote Pilot and the irreversibly contaminated Peacekeeper Aeryn Sun. Each desperately seeks a way home, but first, they have to find a way to trust one another. Daring escapes and selfless acts of courage forge a measure of loyalty, friendship and even love....

Batman: Assault on Arkham Review

Image
Guardians of the Galaxy may have cemented Marvel's domination of comic book films on the big screen, but on the small screen it's a totally different matter. Since 2007 DC Universe Animated Original Movies have been wowing audiences with movie adaptations of some of the most beloved comic book runs as well as original stories starring some of DC Comics' most iconic characters. Where Marvel never really seemed to get their act together in this area, DC kept producing hit after hit. Then in late 2013 the legendary Bruce Timm, who brought us the revered Batman: The Animated Series, stepped down as DC's animation supervising producer and things began to take a turn for the worse. Post-Timm animated features such as Justice League: War, Son of Batman and Flashpoint Paradox all lacked the quality and attention to detail that Timm had brought to his productions. I was beginning to lose hope, and then I watched Batman: Assault on Arkham... Although by no m...

Transformers Gen 1 Remastered Complete Collection Review

Image
For many geeks, Transformers was their first foray into the world of Japanese cartoons. Whether we realised it or not, this now legendary franchise was equal parts American cartoon, Japanese anime and universal toy selling monster. This collaboration between Sunbow, Marvel, Toei and Takara spawned 4 direct seasons (97 episodes) and a seriously expansive extended universe. Like it or not, the success of Transformers as a franchise was helped along, and no doubt dictated, by the sale of transforming die-cast robots. While some may see this a slight against the integrity of the series, I didn't and still don't particularly mind. Some of my earliest memories are of playing with my Transformers toys while watching early morning cartoons before school. Then I'd pack my school bag and sneak in a couple of the smaller bots like Seaspray, Beachcomber or Cosmos. So, to say that this series will be reviewed through rose-coloured glasses is an understatement. This is where i...

A Mech-Heads guide to Watching Transformers

Image
One of the most iconic and enduring cartoon franchises of the 1980s, Transformers and its accompanying universe is as vast as it is awesome but due to its immensity it can be difficult to know where to start.  Sure, you could just start with Gen 1, Season 1 but where to from there?  Unfortunately, not all Transformers series take place in the same universe or continuity so there's no hard and fast rule ,  but we've consulted with the mech-heads at Madman and put together a handy dandy recommended viewing order for their Transformers releases and 100% Bay-free. The Transformers Generation 1 Season 1 This is where it all began, way back in 1984. This was our first introduction to Optimus and the gang who found themselves stranded on "present day" Earth. Also introduced are the majority of main characters who still exist today including Soundwave, Starscream, Megatron and everyone's favourite dim-witted Dinobot, Grimlock. Season 1 weighs in a...

Campione! (DVD) Review

Image
Based on the light novel series of the same name by Jō Taketsuki, Campione! (the ! is supposed to be there), is a real mish-mash of genres and sub-genres, somewhat to the detriment of the cohesiveness of the entire series.  "It’s a long fall from grace once you’ve reached the top. Kusanagi Godo is to become the stuff of legends, when he slays the God of War in fierce combat. Now known as Campione, a God Slayer, Kusanagi is tasked with the job of defending his title and turf against other fierce individuals after the prestigious name. But despite the constant mortal peril, there are some benefits to the job and it comes in the form of some devoted female followers and really how is a guy supposed to resist?" - Hanabee There are some very cool and very epic battles in Campione!, so too is there some very funny/saucy/awkward harem scenes but the problem is that this series doesn't quite commit to either in its short 13 episode run. If only this were an a...

Accel World Part 1 (DVD) Review

Image
There seems to be an increasingly frequent trend in anime of late with series taking place in a time which is so interconnected with the internet that the human psyche, personal connectivity and gaming are inextricably linked. The latest of which to hit Aussie shores, thanks to Hanabee, is Accel World. Comparisons to Sword Art Online aren't completely unwarranted after all the same writer, Reki Kawahara, is responsible for the manage and light novels for both series. Haruyuki, poor short, shy Haruyuki. Completely unremarkable to the naked eye, Haruyuki's real-world exterior hides an incredible online presence wherein the young man is an incredibly talented gamer with an untapped potential. Untapped until he meets Kuroyukihime, Black Lotus.  Haruyuki is a really sweet kid with some serious self-confidence issues. At time it's almost painful to what how crippled he is by his own insecurities. That said, every cringe-worthy moment that he's put through helps t...
