Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw review

Image
Hobbs and Shaw is dumb, bordering on ludicrous, but dripping with self awareness. Which ultimately makes it a big ol bag of fun. I personally hate when people suggest they just “switch their brain off” when they go into a film, because it implies a lack of connection with the screen. I understand what they’re saying though, they want a movie that does what it says on the box. Let me tell you my friends, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw is just that kind of movie. Is it any good? Well here’s the thing, the action is plentiful without ever being too original, the jokes flow thick and fast and the chemistry between the leads is palpable. So yeah, I’ll go so far as to say it’s good. It’s worth a watch on a Friday night with mates after a few post work beers. I predict Hobbs and Shaw will dominate at the global box office, not only cause of brand recognition but mostly due to Dwayne Johnson’s goliath presence and Jason Statham’s well established charm/athleticism. ...

Hercules - Review

Image
Brett Ratner’s Hercules may be big, dumb and predictable but it’s a hell of a fun ride. Given we’ve had several films (one of which was released earlier this year) and a television series to explore the hulking hero’s work, I was surprised to see yet another incarnation hit the big screen so soon. Luckily this version manages to put enough of a twist on the tale to warrant its existence. Having completed his twelve fabled tasks, Hercules roams the land as a sword-for-hire. He’s accompanied by a small band of warriors who not only fight by his side but more importantly help keep the ‘legend’ of Hercules alive and well, since it’s great for business. After years of fighting, Hercules is all set to retire, when he is lured into one final job, helping the King of Thrace quash an evil warlord. Hercules is forced to look deep into his soul and decide if he is the stuff of myth or legend … This film works primarily because it doesn't take itself too seriously. Too many b...

Pain and Gain Review

Image
Sometimes you’ve got to be smart to get away with being stupid. Michael Bay’s latest offering Pain and Gain is proof that if a film is going to be silly and ridiculous it has to stay fully committed to make it work. Mr Bay has taken a break from his goliath Transformers franchise to tell the real life story of three jacked-up, protein-munching body builders who get embroiled in extortion plan which goes horribly wrong.

Fast and Furious 6 - Review by Stu

Image
The year is 2001: Limp Bizkit is wowing people with lyrics that don’t make a lick of sense, Starbucks is marching over Australia like it’s Poland and two plucky up-starts have just graced the screen in a blatant rip-off of Point Break. Little did we know then that twelve years later, The Fast and The Furious would have spawned five sequels (with at least two more in the pipeline) and amassed a devoted base of  followers.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation - Review by Stu Coote

Image
My first exposure to G.I. Joe came in the form of the 80s animated film and an action figure my grandmother bought me. Many a weekend morning my sister and I would sit down and watch the cartoon over and over again. I admire the simplicity of G.I. Joe which is good (G.I. Joe) vs. evil (Cobra) with massive guns and cool vehicles. I never saw the 2009 G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra , however I went into this film with expectations set to sceptical. Much to my surprise I was met by an entertaining film with never took itself seriously and delivered exactly what I needed from the franchise.
