Star Wars: Aftermath - Review

Image
DISCLAIMER: While there don't appear to be any explicit references to future events, it is possible that aspects of Aftermath are intended to foreshadow developments in Episode VII: The Force Awakens this December. Also, given the lack of pictures from the book (since this is, y'know, a novel), the in-text images will be stills released for The Force Awakens instead.  The short version, for those not wishing anything in-depth, is that I liked Aftermath. Quite a bit. However, those wishing to remain clean of any possible spoilerage should tread lightly in this review with a POSSIBLE MILD SPOILER WARNING . ____________________________________________________________________________ When it comes to Star Wars , I'm a massive fan of the books. In addition to all the Old Republic and Prequel Trilogy stories like Outbound Flight and The Rise of Darth Vader , I bought a lot of the old post- Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe novels back in the day. More tha...

1,000 Posts = 1 Million Memories

Can you believe it? Geek of Oz is officially 1,000 posts old! After starting Geek of Oz all on my lonesome, it has now grown to be something that I'm immensely proud of. Not only is it a website/blog that I'd want to visit myself, but it's also home to 8 of the coolest geeks I've been privileged to know.  Over the past few years I've experienced things that, as a geek myself, I never would have dreamed of. In the early days I was lucky enough to interview Neil Gaiman in the foyer of a Hobart hotel, just the two of us and much tea. This interview would eventually be my first published work with Mark Millar contacting me personally to use the interview in the pages of CLiNT magazine in the UK. Soon after, I took a road trip Mr Gaiman's wife, Amanda Palmer , and her tour manager, a beautiful man by the name of Eric Sussman . As time went on, I met even more wonderful folks, each of whom left an indelible mark on my geeky soul including JJ Abrams ,   Brian Mi...

Old favourites Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker will be back to reprise their legendary roles. Also confirmed is that John Williams will be back as composer. JJ Abrams is quoted as saying "We are so excited to finally share the cast of  Star Wars : Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks...

Star Trek Into Darkness surfs into Bondi

Image
Only hours away from tonight's red carpet premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness in Sydney, J.J. Abrams, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban hit Bondi Beach with their custom made Star Trek surfboards. Apparently there was a red board made up but it was destroyed by a Gorn moments after leaving the factory. When will they ever learn? Sure, I haven't been to a beach in nearly 10 years but I need one of those boards more than I need oxygen! Sad but true. Click to enlarge

Star Trek Into Darkness Kicks it up a Notch

Image
Being lucky enough to be invited to a screening of the first 30 minutes of Star Trek Into Darkness, I can promise that this film is bringing the epic. As a lifelong Trekker/Trekkie, JJ Abrams and the rest of the Bad Robot crew have taken everything that I love about Star Trek and made it accessible to the masses. Trek is no longer just for us geeks, Star Trek is for everybody - a fact that Mr Roddenberry would no doubt smile about. Without further ado, we present you with an brand new trailer and this statement: May 9th cannot come soon enough.

Star Trek Into Darkness Featurette Brings the Epic

Paramount and Namco Bandai join forces to deliver Star Trek

Image
Sure, video games based on movies suck. No, really. They suck. BUT, Star Trek is looking incredible. Not only visually but also in terms of gameplay. The Star Trek franchise has had a chequered history when it comes to games, from the arguably awesome Star Trek: Elite Force II to the less-than-stellar Star Trek: Encounters. Regardless, Namco Bandai Partners have announced their partnership with Paramount to deliver the game as well as a special pack for Australian and New Zealand preorders! Check it out after the jump!

Star Trek Into Darkness Super Bowl Spot

Image
The Super Bowl isn't just for sports fans, it's also for excited geeks the world over. Every year movie studios pay ridiculous amounts of money to showcase the biggest blockbusters of the year. As such, it should come as no surprise that Star Trek: Into Darkness made an appearance and it looks AWESOME! In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his cr...

Star Trek: Into Darkness First Poster

Image
When J.J. Abrams was announce as the director of the Star Trek reboot, geeks the world over. When we saw what he had done with our beloved Starfleet we sighed in relief then squeed with delight. So, it should come as no surprise that the sequel, Star Trek: Into Darkness, is high on our priority list for 2013. The poster itself shows who we can only assume is the main antagonist (Benedict Cumberbatch). What we don't know is whether he will be playing the role of Khan as many a geek would love, or the much less known Gary Mitchell, an ex-Starfleet officer who goes rogue. Check out the official synopsis and details about the upcoming trailer after the jump!

Movie Review - Super 8 by Guest Reviewer Stu!

Image
Super 8 is the latest film by JJ Abrams which follows six young friends who, whilst making a film, witness a military train derailment. Unbeknownst to the kids is the nature of the cargo on the train and the conspiracy that has now engulfed them. The film is quite ambitious as it explores such things as first love, grief, parental responsibilities while at the same time being a traditional monster film.
