As The Good Books Say: Chris' 10 Best Readables of 2017

Image
Since everyone seemed to enjoy last year's write-up , here's my (admittedly belated) take on the 10 best things you should've read in 2017! If you did check any of these out, give yourself a cookie. Please keep in mind, due to work/family/travel/getting married/having a honeymoon/sleeping where possible over the past year, there are a number of great books and comics I didn't get a chance to check out; this list is spun off from the fruits of my 2017 Goodreads labours only. Please don't hate me for not including The Language of Thorns  or Secret Empire.  (but really, is that last one going to make anyone's lists for anything  celebratory?) --- 10. Slugfest: Inside the Epic, 50-Year Battle between Marvel and DC Though it lacks in flair at times, Reed Tucker delivers an insightful and rigorously researched look at the animosity between the Big Two of superhero comics. The historical narratives Tucker pens are fascinating, though the work occasionally...

WE LIKE TO WATCH: EPISODE FIFTY EIGHT - JUSTICE LEAGUE

Image
Episode 58! Stu and Billy are back this week to discuss Justice League . Justice League is the 5th installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), and follows on from the events of Batman v Superman. The film is directed by Zack Snyder ( 300, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman ) and written by Chris Terrio ( Argo, Batman v Superman ) and Joss Whedon ( Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron ). Fueled by their restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince unite new allies to face an even greater threat. The team consisting of Barry Allen, Arthur Curry, and Victor Stone must face the catastrophic threat of Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons, who are on the hunt for three Mother Boxes on Earth, while the world reflects on Superman's death. Despite this formation of an unprecedented league of heroes -- Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash -- it may be too late to save the ...

Putting In a Good Word: Chris' 5 Best Readables of 2016

Image
Presented herein are the five (subjectively) best readables from novels and comics which Chris breezed through in 2016, whilst pretending he has a real job (he doesn't). --- 5 - Batman, Volume 9: Bloom (Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Danny Miki, Yanick Paquette & FCO Plascencia) As the DC Universe headed for its sixty-billionth reboot with the "Rebirth" event last year, the few beloved series left in the New 52 started winding down. At the top of that count-on-one-hand list of good books still going was Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Batman , a superlative run for the character which will undoubtedly stand the test of time (especially when some of it's collected in such swanky hardcovers ). The penultimate volume of their run, Bloom allowed Snyder and Capullo to start firing off climaxes for a story five years in the making - and fire off, they did. The bulk of their swan song for Batman takes place here, as he battles the eldritch villain Mr. Bloom b...

EB Expo 2014 by Two Geeks

Image
Last Friday Billy and I were lucky enough to attend EB Expo as media, and man did we have a blast. Everywhere you looked there were sweet, sweet video games just waiting to be played. In order to communicate the awesome that was the EB Expo to you in a way that's more understandable than me drooling in the corner whilst repeating the word 'games' over and over, Billy and I thought we'd have a chat over the highly personal medium that is Facebook chat and edit it into something that resembles a write-up on the convention. Enjoy! - Christof Christof: So what was your first impression of the expo? Billy: It was actually pretty schmick! The lights, displays and sounds that greeted us made me go a little "Whoa!" in a Keanu kind of way. Christof: I know, right! The level of showmanship that went into the expo was  truly  impressive. Billy:  T he ease in which the crowd and entrance was organized was great. Everything seemed to flow so s...

Batman: Assault on Arkham Review

Image
Guardians of the Galaxy may have cemented Marvel's domination of comic book films on the big screen, but on the small screen it's a totally different matter. Since 2007 DC Universe Animated Original Movies have been wowing audiences with movie adaptations of some of the most beloved comic book runs as well as original stories starring some of DC Comics' most iconic characters. Where Marvel never really seemed to get their act together in this area, DC kept producing hit after hit. Then in late 2013 the legendary Bruce Timm, who brought us the revered Batman: The Animated Series, stepped down as DC's animation supervising producer and things began to take a turn for the worse. Post-Timm animated features such as Justice League: War, Son of Batman and Flashpoint Paradox all lacked the quality and attention to detail that Timm had brought to his productions. I was beginning to lose hope, and then I watched Batman: Assault on Arkham... Although by no m...
