Gundam Unicorn Volume 7 Review

Image
This is it. The final installment of the 4 year long feature film / OVA foray back into the Gundam UC universe. Gundam Unicorn volume 7 neatly wraps up all of the loose ends and plot points that have been introduced over the previous 6 volumes and if you’ve been following the series yourself, you’ll know that there was plenty to put to bed. Laplace’s Box, that mysteriously powerful something has been located and revealed and takes us back to where it all began. Banagher is hot on the heels of Full Frontal winding up back at Industrial 7 but before his final battle, Banagher must first get through the Rozen Zulu and Banshee Norn.  Needless to say, this series could not successfully be resolved without a massive amount of action and action we get. Instead of slicing through nameless, faceless automatons, Banagher and the Unicorn face off against  Angelo and Riddhe, two extremely capable pilots in two extremely powerful mobile suits. What eventuates is a hi...

Beginners Guide to Gunpla with Tom from HobbyCo

Image
At last weeks Sydney Manga and Anime Show (SMASH) , I had the chance to speak with Tom from HobbyCo who filled us in on what's what in the world of GunPla. GunPla is a contraction or portmanteau of Gun dam Pla stic Model and is quite often given to any anime related plastic model kit. Following the release of the original Mobile Suit Gundam series in 1979 came a line of plastic model kits in 1980. Since its inception there have been hundreds of kits released of nearly every mecha design in varying sizes and levels of detail. Diving into the world of GunPla can be daunting so I had a chat with Tom to tell us where to start.

Anime on the Horizon - Madman October 2012

Image
October 2011 was probably the biggest month of releases for the entire year and this year October looks even bigger. It seems as though October is the month that Madman release big box sets and by big, I mean HUMONGOUS!  This year we see some of our favourites, old and new, collected into tidy packages which would make a perfect Christmas gift idea. That said, don't dilly dally because last years Fullmetal Alchemist Complete Collection sold out in no time! Check out some of the choice releases after the jump!

SMASH! 2012 Round Up

Image
SMASH! 2012 was huge. Upon entering the main exhibitor floor it was immediately apparent that, compared to last year, numbers were well and truly up. Perhaps because of the fantastic line up of stars or perhaps because the state of anime fandom in Australia is on the rise. Either way, we had a ball at SMASH! and look forward to 2013. Follow on after the jump to check out a few photos from throughout the day (click to enlarge) and don't forget to check out our coverage of the Madman panel , the Hanabee panel and our interview with the lovely Sakura Tange!

Anime Review - Mobile Suit Gundam (First Gundam) Collection 1

Image
This is where it all began. Undoubtedly the most successful and perhaps the most significant anime series of all time, Gundam is so much more than just another franchise and is as popular now as when its eponymous series was released in 1979. Filled with action, political intrigue and social commentary Mobile Suit Gundam ( 機動戦士ガンダム)  is to Japan as Star Wars (or Star Trek) is to the West. "The year is 0079 of the Universal Century. The Earth Federation and its space colonies are engaged in an apocalyptic war. The rebellious Principality of Zeon, using humanoid fighting machines called mobile suits, has all but vanquished the Federation. Now the Federation's last hope is the prototype mobile suit Gundam. When a twist of fate makes young civilian Amuro Ray the Gundam's pilot, his own battle begins."

Anime Reviews - Gundam Unicorn Volume 1

Released on DVD locally by Madman, Mobie Suit Gundam Unicorn takes place in the same timeline as the original series, Mobile Suit Gundam, and is based upon a novel by the same name by Harutoshi Fukui.  "The year is U.C. 0096. Three years have passed since the end of the Second Neo Zeon War. It is said that the Vist Foundation manipulates the Earth Federation and Anaheim Electronics from behind the scenes. Hoping to create a new world, the Foundation attempts to hand over a certain secret to the Neo Zeon remnants known as the Sleeves. This will mean the opening of Laplaces Box, which holds a great secret tied to the origins of the Universal Century."
