TO INFINITY WAR AND BEYOND: EPISODE FIFTEEN - DR STRANGE

Image
This week things get strange... or should we say Dr. Strange! (Sorry). It’s Marvel’s luke-warm classic about medicine, magic and one very awkward American accent. Also Billy forces Christof to watch a trailer for the 1970’s Dr. Strange Tele-movie for some reason. Topics include: ‘magic’, 2016’s most controversial emails, astral projection mansplaining and Christof gets really shitty about a continuity error. As always it would make our day if you could take a couple of minutes to rate and reviews us on iTunes or drop us some feedback below! Really keen to have your input in the show. Enjoy!                                       Get it from Whooshkaa  here                                             Get it from Itunes  here If you want to enga...

THE FOREVERS: CURT PIRES INTERVIEW

Image
Over the weekend we had a chance to interview Curt Pires about his new series, The Forevers , which sees it's second issue released today from Black Mask Studios. We talked about the creation of series, the team involved and little about what's to come next. Enjoy. Geek Of Oz: Hi Curt, thanks for taking the time out for this interview. In The Forevers we have a group of individuals struggling on the brink of stardom, who then take up a black magic pact to achieve everything they wanted. Now stories about selling your soul or making a pact with the devil in exchange for fame and fortune are fairly well trodden ground, what inspired your unique take on the trope with The Forevers?  Curt Pires: I think what started everything for me was that first scene in the book. It just came to me. The imagery of them all getting ready to participate in this ritual, to just sort of cut in on it in a really obtuse way where not much is explained, and then jump forward in ti...

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - Review

Image
This review assumes you’ve either read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child , or are not that fussed on it. For obvious reasons, then, expect spoilers in this one. HUGE spoilers. --- I want to make two things clear at the outset. The first is that I was a massive fan of Harry Potter. Tremendously massive. The books guided me through late childhood and my teenage years with more verve and influence than both the Old and New Testaments combined. I saw all the movies on opening night, even though most of them were of questionable quality. The only things I bought on a trip to MovieWorld when I was 12 were a wand and a Quidditch baseball cap. But my fan response to Harry Potter differs substantially from the majority. I’m not a ‘shipper, nor am I a consumer of alternate universe fanfiction where certain characters don’t die/hook up/cross over with other franchises. As much as I adore Harry Potter’s scholastic adventures, my love for the series does not extend to the prol...

Millennium's Rule: Angel of Storms - Review

Image
A powerful, worlds-walking sorcerer called the Raen, long thought dead, has returned. His sudden reappearance affects our two protagonists; Tyen Ironsmelter, a magic teacher at an academy on one world, and Rielle Lazuli, a weaver and latent magical prodigy on another. Tyen is forced to leave the academy when it shuts down, taking with him Vella, a woman for whom he is seeking a cure for her condition, on account of the fact that she's been turned into a book. Rielle, meanwhile, escapes a brush with death in order to file in with the Travellers, a group of nomads who are able to magically transport themselves between worlds. On separate trajectories, both characters will need to find ways to face both the Raen and their own changing natures. That last bit may sound like a bit of a weak ending to the above paragraph, but part of the problem of reviewing Angel of Storms comes from its plot shifts. Note that I said 'shifts' rather than 'twists' (though there are still...

Mistborn: Shadows of Self - Review

Image
If there's one thing Brandon Sanderson is a master of, it's world-building. If there's a second thing, it's genre-mashing. If there's a third, it's probably something obscure, like mini-golfing or cake decorating. Picking up a year after where The Alloy of Law left off, Shadows of Self  continues fleshing out the wild west-styled world of Mistborn, centuries after the climax of the original trilogy. It's the same kind of 'swallow metal and gain superpowers' schtick, but alongside bowler hats, carriages and magic-aided revolvers. Kinda like that awesomely terrible Wild Wild West  film with Will Smith, except the giant metal spider is replaced by people in evening wear who can fly and slow time. So, y'know, better. Nobleman and part-time law enforcer Waxillium Ladrian has a problem; namely, his uncle, who's secretly the head of an evil crime syndicate controlling the city of Elendel in the middle of a protracted period of civil unrest. Whi...

Magic the Gathering has Something for Everyone in 2014

Image
I'll happily admit that I'm somewhat unversed in the ways of trading card games (TCG), in fact, last year was the first time I actually played! That said, I really enjoyed the experience and can appreciate what makes it so addictive. Unfortunately for me and my bank balance, Wizards of the Coast have announced their 2014 line up and I'm quietly thinking that 2014 may be the year that I seriously pick it up! If paper cards aren't your thing, download the Duels of the Planeswalkers game or even the Magic Online game! It looks as though Magic has something for everything so HAVE AT THEE! Check out the full details after the jump!
