Boyhood - Review

Image
Richard Linklater’s Boyhood is one hell of a cinematic achievement considering that it was filmed over the course of twelve years whilst maintaining the same cast. As the title suggests, the film focuses on the life of Mason (Ellar Coltrane) from age five to eighteen. It’s rather compelling to watch someone grow up on screen over the course of a few hours, something I guess we’re more used to seeing in television series or film franchises like Harry Potter ; although in those cases we tend to get instalments usually spaced out over a few years. Boyhood is an outstanding film for both the technical excellence and dedication required to produce it and the touching story which is being told, few films of late have left me as moved when I emerged from them as this one did. We first meet Mason when he’s lying on the ground staring up at the clouds waiting for his mum (Patricia Arquette) to pick him up after school. Mason’s an adorable little guy who even at a young age is part day-...

Sinister Review

Image
The horror genre is stale. Over the last few years, horror films have been more interested with cheap thrills and gore than lingering chills and actual horror. Undoubtedly due in part to the profitability of the Saw and Paranormal Activity franchises.  In fact, the promotional poster for Sinister proclaims that it's "from the producer of Paranormal Activity". While this is surely a selling point to the general public, Sinister is a far superior film to any of the Paranormal Activity films.

Ah, the good old "found footage" sub-genre. It works so well and for one simple reason, it grounds the events in reality and in return scares the bejesus out of me. Enter, SINISTER. In Cinemas May 30, the new frightening supernatural thriller from the producer of the Paranormal Activity films and the director of The Exorcism of Emily Rose, SINISTER stars Ethan Hawke as Elison, a true-crime writer who lacks inspiration and decides to move into a new home with his family. When he discovers a box of disturbing 8mm films in his attic, he watches a series of gruesome crimes and begins to delve further into the story. He soon uncovers a terrifying truth that could put the lives of his family and his own at risk.
