Welcome to Night Vale: A Novel - Review

Image
Hello, readers. This is a review about a book that a reviewer read. It may have been a book that you yourself have read. It may have been a book that you yourself have not read. It may have been a book designed to bring about the destruction of the known universe simply through the mere fact of its existence. It is sometimes hard to know these things. Whatever the book may be, you should know that the review of this book will contain NO SPOILERS, the declaration of which is capitalised because it is Important. Things that are Important are always capitalised, except for the word capitalised itself, which is not capitalised, even though it is Important. Have you ever noticed that? And now, a word from our reviewer. --- I'll be upfront straight away: Welcome to Night Vale: A Novel is, I feel, more of a book for fans of the long-running podcast than anything else. It's not entirely inaccessible for those who haven't heard it, but it'll be tough going for most; t...

Star Wars: Aftermath - Review

Image
DISCLAIMER: While there don't appear to be any explicit references to future events, it is possible that aspects of Aftermath are intended to foreshadow developments in Episode VII: The Force Awakens this December. Also, given the lack of pictures from the book (since this is, y'know, a novel), the in-text images will be stills released for The Force Awakens instead.  The short version, for those not wishing anything in-depth, is that I liked Aftermath. Quite a bit. However, those wishing to remain clean of any possible spoilerage should tread lightly in this review with a POSSIBLE MILD SPOILER WARNING . ____________________________________________________________________________ When it comes to Star Wars , I'm a massive fan of the books. In addition to all the Old Republic and Prequel Trilogy stories like Outbound Flight and The Rise of Darth Vader , I bought a lot of the old post- Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe novels back in the day. More tha...

G4 to Air Ready Player One DeLorean Giveaway

Image
Not long ago we reviewed the brilliant Ready Player One before speaking to it's equally brilliant author, Ernest Cline.  He was incredibly giving with his time in speaking to us and just cemented his title of "The Master of Magnanimity" by giving away a 1981 DeLorean featuring its very own flux capacitor.  Check out the full details after the jump!

Book Review - Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

If you are looking at this blog, chances are, you're some kind of pop culture devotee. If you're not looking at this blog, you'll have no idea that this is being written so please, disregard and carry on with your cross stitch and wood whittling. Ready Player One is written by who I can only describe as being the Gandalf to my Frodo, the Merlin to my Arthur or the Doc Brown to my McFly. What I'm trying to say is that through his debut novel, it is immediately evident that he is some kind of magical pop-culture warlock who presumably has an eidetic memory. The perfect mix of World of Warcraft, The Wizard and Tron - Ready Player One is the ultimate read for geeks the world over.

Interview - Night Angel Author Brent Weeks

Image
If you haven't read the Night Angel series yet, you've no doubt seen the covers. Upon release and for a long while after these three novels were on shelves EVERYWHERE! From Borders (RIP) and Dymocks to Target and K-Mart if you looked on a book shelf, it was there. His latest series is the Lightbringer trilogy and it tells a story that is almost impossible to put into words. Thankfully, Mr Weeks manages to do so. The universe of Chromeria, colour magic, Blackguards and Prisms takes us to a world that is fresh and exciting while still managing to give everything a well established, lived in feeling. Book One, The Black Prism, is the most absorbing book that I have read in the last few years and will soon be followed up by Book Two, The Blinding Knife. Mr. Weeks was kind enough to spare some time and have a chat to us here at The Geek of Oz.
