WE LIKE TO WATCH: EPISODE THIRTY FOUR - SILENCE

Image
Episode 34! Stu and Billy are back this week to discuss Silence ! Silence  is a historical drama film directed by Martin Scorsese ( The Wolf of Wall Street, The Departed, The Aviator ) and is based on the book of the same name by Shusaku Endo. The story focuses on two Christian missionaries, Sebastiao Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Francisco Garupe (Adam Driver), who travel to Japan in search of their Mentor Father Cristovao Ferreira (Liam Neeson). At this time Christianity was outlawed in Japan and the priests presence forbidden. The film also features Tadanobu Asano, Issey Ogata, Shinya Tsukamoto. As well as the film, Stu and I discuss what else we've been watching this week, and look over the latest in movie news. As always it would make our day if you could take a couple of minutes to rate and reviews us on iTunes or drop us some feedback below! Really keen to have your input in the show. Enjoy!               ...

Across the Nightingale Floor - Review

Image
Fourteen years since its initial publication, Across the Nightingale Floor is a calm, measured book. It's the kind of fantasy unconcerned with frenetic plotting and frequent action, preferring to channel its energy into developing compelling characters, multifaceted politics and a sprawling world inspired by the real feudal Japan. Though it's been a beloved Australian classic for the better part of two decades, I'm only now experiencing Lian Hearn's Tales of the Otori for the first time. This is thanks in part to the recent re-release of Hearn's series in gorgeous new covers, but also because the prequel series, The Tale of Shikanoko , set three hundred years before Otori , begins in March 2016. So before seeing where everything begins in the fictional world, it's good to go back to the beginning in the real one. The Three Countries are ruled by the Clans. After escaping the destruction of his village and the murder of his family, the young boy Tomasu is res...

Japan Music Festival Touring Australia

Image
Aussie Japanophiles rejoice! Thanks to the Japan Music Festival, you can experience live J-Pop, J-Rock and J-Alt bands in your very own capital city (if you live in NSW, VIC or QLD).  If there's one thing that fans of Japanese pop-culture are desperately lacking it's access to Japanese music. Buying CD's from Japan is prohibitively expensive and there's hardly anything available on iTunes but now there is a third and infinitely more exciting option: live music. Japan Music Festival promises to bring the best of Japan's underground nightlife to Australian shores. Australia gets its first Japanese Music Festival!  Direct from Japan - this is the first in what will be an annual event featuring the very best of Tokyo's alternative nightlife and culture right here in Australia!  From April 1st to the 6th Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane will play host to four of Japan's most revered live J-Pop, J-Rock and J-Alt bands. Called very appropriate...

Anime News - Mirai Suenaga gets a Nendoroid

Image
Danny Choo is a little bit of a hero of mine. He is much like myself, a massive anime and manga geek who is desperately in love with all things Japanese. The difference between us is that Mr Choo busted his butt and eventually became the man that he is today, a cultural advisor to the Japanese government, pop culture companies and a celebrity in his own right. Well, his very own creation and Culture Japan mascot and Mirai Millenium main character, Mirai Suenaga , is getting the Nendoroid treatment and we have all of the details on what you can look forward to and where to get it.

My Love Affair With Japan

Image
"Shinjuku Skyline" by Ryan I am absolutely infatuated with Japan. I have been for an incredibly long time and I'm not the only one. But why? What is it about this tiny country of extremes that draws the admiration of foodies, geeks, nerds and (supposed) normal people alike? How can one country make me feel the love that I do, especially considering how much I struggle with the language?

My Trip to Japan - Part 2

Read on, good people, for part 2 of my recollection from my most recent trip to Japan. In Part 1 my lovely wife and I arrived at Kansai Airport before making our way to our hotel in Osaka.

My Trip to Japan - Part 1

Read on as I regale you with stories of my most recent trip to Japan. I'll include some pictures and such. I'm sure that you will realise that I have a love affair with the beautiful country of juxtaposition.

It's Official... I am in Love With Japan!

My wife and I are having such a great time here in Japan. I'm writing this in the lobby of my hotel in Kyoto saddened by the fact that I only have 2 more days until I have to go home! Stupid home! Stay tuned for some photos from my trip including Cookie Monster, Bert & Ernie, deer, Engrish signs and some other tidbits from my all too short holiday.

Holiday... celebrate!

Yep, that`s right... a Madonna reference and I don`t even care because I`m on holiday. I`m in Japan at the moment so there will be a distinct lack of updates until about the 16th of October. But when I get back prepare to have the socks blown off your mind. Your mind socks! Highlights so far, the Okonomiyaki in Osaka, photos with Popeye, getting sick on the Back to the Future ride and the glorious, glorious food! Sayonara suckah!
